Move over KiKi.. Time for Rain Water Harvesting challenge!! Are you ready?

Water harvesting is the activity of direct collection of rain water. The rain water collected can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into the ground water. It refers to collection and storage of rain water and also other activities such as harvesting surface water, extracting ground water prevention of losses through evaporation and seepage.

In olden time, water management, including rain water harvesting was implemented across all the places whether forming ponds, or storing rain water in big container in home. With urbanization, all those traditions and techniques been forgotten. Water department in Tamil Nadu wants to infuse new energy into the rain water harvesting scheme

Challenge

As per the challenge initiated in Tamil Nadu, a resident has been invited to click pictures with rainwater harvesting implementation structure and upload them to the Facebook page. Time being this challenge is for Chennai residents.

Steps

Simple illustration of how much water can be harvested

Consider a building with a flat terrace area of 100 sq.m. The average annual rainfall in Chennai is approximately 1300mm. In simple terms, this means that if all the rain that falls on the terrace is retained, then in one year there will be rain water on the terrace floor to a height of 1300mm.

Area of Terrace 100 sq.m.
Height of rainfall 1.30m (1300 mm)
Volume of rainfall over the Terrace Area x Height of Rainfall 100 sq.m. x 1.30 m : 130 cu.m. (1,30,000 litres)

Assuming that 60% of the total rainfall is effectively harvested. Volume of water harvested = 1,30,000 x 0.6 = 78,000 litres

That means ( 78,000 / 365 ~ ) 213 litres of water per day will be available for the household. That much quantity of water is enough to meet the drinking and cooking needs of a household having around 8 to 10 members. Source: CMWSSB website.
